What's a URL?

URL is an acronym for Uniform Resource Locator.

A URL is the address you type into your web browser to visit a website — for example, http://www.example.com.

URL's can be longer such as:

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=ntt_athr_dp_sr_1?_encoding=UTF8&sort=relevancerank&search-alias=books&field-author=Leo%20Tolstoy

People use URLNumber.com to:

  • Save typing space by shortening URL's (e.g. Twitter only allows 140 characters per message)
  • Make URL's faster and easier to type into web browsers
  • Make URL's easier to communicate over the phone and in conversation
  • Make URL's easier to communicate to people in a foreign language
  • Link corporate, personal or mobile phone numbers to websites/Facebook pages
  • Link to company names or trademarks, e.g. 711
  • Stop URL's being broken (e.g. longer URL's can have line feeds inserted into them by email programs, breaking the link)
  • Make URLs easier to type using a numeric keypad e.g. via mobile phones
  • Track links to learn how many people are clicking on them and when.
